Do you know the most frequent command in all scripture? To REMEMBER.
The command to remember is said over 550+ times in scripture, and if it’s used that frequently in the word, we should probably take note! We so easily forget what God has done in our lives, do we not?
It’s no surprise that a daily prayer recited by God’s followers for thousands of years called The Shema (Deut 6:4-8) is a passage to help God’s people remember what God has done and to share those truths in everyday life.
Remembering God’s goodness and work in our lives keeps us in the right perspective, no matter the season. It fuels us with worship for what He alone can accomplish.
Let’s explore how we can begin practicing “remembering” together as a couple.

God’s Hand in Your Love Story
Every love story is unique, and as followers of Jesus, we believe that God’s hand is intricately woven into every chapter of our journey together. Reflecting on how God has orchestrated your love story can be a powerful way to recognize His providence and nurture a heart of gratitude.
For us, these moments of reflection often happen during our weekly date nights or annual retreats. For example, this weekend, we celebrated our 16th anniversary by getting out of town and looking back through old photos on our phones from the past couple of years, which sparked many cherished memories. These simple times together remind us of the many ways God has faithfully been at work in our marriage.
We encourage you to start with the little things and take time to remember together over a cup of coffee. Reflect on:
-
How did you meet, and what was your first date like?
-
The feelings during the proposal and the anticipation of what was next.
-
A time when God clearly provided for you financially, spiritually, or relationally.
-
Instances when God provided encouragement and support through a friend or family member during a hard season.
These reflections create a heart of worship and thankfulness for all God has done in your marriage.
God’s Presence in Every Season
Marriage brings us through various seasons, from the mountaintop honeymoon experience to the valleys of losing jobs, family members, and friends. Remembering how God has shown up each season reminds us of His constant presence.
One exercise we’ve found helpful is practicing a listening prayer, where we ask Jesus to reveal where He was in specific moments. As we focus on Him, we listen for His answers, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through the thoughts that come to mind. This practice helps us remember His presence in hard, difficult, or joyful seasons. Consider asking:
-
God, where were you showing me your love today that I wasn’t aware of?
-
Jesus, what do you want me to learn or know from that season?
-
Father, is there any fear preventing me from fully experiencing you right now?
-
Jesus, is there anything you want me to remember from this specific season of life?
Creating Stones of Remembrance
In the Old Testament, God commanded His people to stack stones as a “stone of remembrance.” These served as memorials to remind future generations of God’s divine provision and faithfulness, as seen in Joshua 4:1-3.
For the Worley household, we created our own “stone of remembrance” with a prayer box. This box sits in our kitchen and holds prayer requests from our family and guests. We place our God-sized prayer requests with dates into the box and pray over them throughout the year.
After practicing this for a few years, we’ve seen God answer incredible prayers, which we mark in the box to remember together as a family. These moments of answered prayers show us His faithfulness and encourage us to continue trusting Him.
Learning to remember is a valuable rhythm to practice together as a couple and even as a family. If you have children, one of your primary roles is to help them become “rememberers.” Start getting into the rhythm of practicing remembrance and reflection with those you love. Use these times to reflect on all that God has done in your life, giving Him all the worship and praise for His faithfulness and great works in your life.
